The LRT-1 will implement a new round of hikes effective April 2, where the minimum fare is Php 16 and the maximum fare is Php 53 for stored value cards and Php 20 to Php 55 for single-journey tickets. The last time the LRT-1 implemented a fare hike was August 2, 2023.
As agreed upon with the DOTr’s Rail Regulatory Unit, the base boarding fare will be Php 16,25 with a distance fare of Php 1.47 per kilometer.
Other changes include a Php 35 fare (from Php 30) from Dr. Santos Station to United Nations Station and Php 55 (from Php 45) from Dr. Santos Station to Fernando Poe Jr. Station.
For the new round of fare hikes for LRT-1, LRMC President and CEO Enrico Benipayo explained that the updated fares are necessary for continuous maintenance and upgrades. “Public transport is a service that requires continuous investment in maintenance, upgrades, and expansion. Countries with world-class transport systems such as Singapore and Japan adjust fares regularly to keep services efficient and safe,” Benipayo said.
To LRT-1’s credit, there have been a lot of changes since the last fare hike. These include new trains, station upgrades, and the opening of the Phase 1 Cavite Extension Project to cater to more commuters. Benipayo also added that this is only the second time the LRMC was granted a fare hike in the last 10 years despite the recent opening of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension.
