The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) of the Philippines recently released an official update on the number of islands in the country, revealing a substantial increase from the long-accepted figure of 7,107 to an astonishing 7,641 islands, clustered into three major island groups: Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
This increase is attributed to the advent of advanced technological methods, particularly Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR), which allowed for more precise mapping and discovery of previously undocumented landforms.
The vast archipelago of the Philippines, known for its diverse and dynamic geography, harbored these islands for many years, eluding detection due to earlier technological limitations and the ever-changing nature of its landscapes.
