Saw studio Lionsgate has announced that it’s adapting Red Barrel’s hit indie horror game Outlast as a feature-length film.
The Outlast Movie Is Helmed By Barbarian And It Producer
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, the movie is helmed by producer Roy Lee (Barbarian, It, Late Night with the Devil), with J. T. Petty, who has written for the entire Outlast series as well as Tom Clany’s Splinter Cell, involved in the screenplay.
“When Outlast launched in 2012, it changed the landscape of horror gaming, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre,” Roy Lee said. “Its deep, emergent lore has provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that delves into the psychological and physical horrors at the core of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for both new viewers and the series’ dedicated fans.”
Red Barrels creative director and co-founder David Chateauneuf added, “As die-hard fans of horror across every medium, we are great admirers of Roy Lee’s and Lionsgate’s work. Horror movies old and new have had an undeniable impact on our franchise over the years, and to now have the opportunity to work on an Outlast film with true horror legends is a dream, or should I say, nightmare, come true.”
There’s no word yet on when we can expect the Outlast film or who is directing it, let alone starring in it, but this is a huge move for the series, bringing it to the silver screen and an entirely new audience.
It’s not the only indie horror game of late to make the leap, either. In 2018, we saw Slender Man emerge from internet urban legend into a supernatural motion picture, while more recently, Five Nights at Freddy’s made such a successful splash that a sequel is already underway.
Speaking of the future, we don’t just have the Outlast movie to look forward to, but an Iron Lung adaptation as well. Directed, written, produced, and funded by YouTuber Mark ‘Markiplier’ Fischbach no less.
